If you want to see the Gates, be prepared to get up really early or stay up really late.  GothamToGo met up with #100Gates past Project Director, Natalie Raben and the Commissioner of NYC SBS, Gregg Bishop early in front of the not-yet-open El Nuevo Caridad, on the corner of Second Avenue and 116th Street, to check out 17 of the 50 Gates that make up the #100GatesProject in El Barrio.

Thanks to the NYC SBS grant program, Neighborhood 360, 50 new murals painted by local artists roll up & down throughout East Harlem.  As we walked, Raben explained the process, “Each mural is a unique collaboration between a local artist and a small business via the 100 Gates Project, a public art project with roots in the Lower East Side, operated by the Lower East Side Partnership.”

The 100 Gates Project began connecting artists and businesses in New York’s Lower East Side in the summer of 2014.  Operated by the Lower East Side Partnership, the initiative connects local artists with local businesses, replacing unwanted graffiti with public art.  In the Fall of 2016, the Project celebrated the 100th Gate in the Lower East Side at the iconic Katz’s Deli. Soon after, the Project was awarded a Neighborhood 360 grant from NYC Department of Small Business Services to fund an expansion into two new neighborhoods ~ East Harlem and Downtown Staten Island.
